After a week or so of sorting, lifting, and taking things to the dump, our house has changed shape a bit. What used to be the office is now Nathan's room (more on this in a bit), what used to be the Rec Room/Piano Room/Exercise Room has now become the Rec Room/Office. This last transformation involved giving away the piano (which only Nathan plays) and moving the exercise machine (or stuffed animal holder, depending upon definitions) to the garage. Grammy and Great Aunt Lucy came out to help. Alison and I went to work one morning and the office was upstairs, and when we got home it was downstairs. Pretty nifty - like having house elves :). We had an entire minivan load of garbage/recycling to take to the dump, and we sent Grammy and Aunt Lucy home with another load to store. And we still can't park in the garage. But the rooms look great. I'll try to get some pictures up later. The main attraction, though, is Nathan's bedroom. We got a fresh coat of paint and a big boy bed in there (after the paint was dry, of course). Nathan thought this was great. He was running around the room and then throwing himself at the bed, climbing up, saying "big boy bed!" and then starting over. On Sunday we asked him - "Do you want to take a nap in your crib or in your big boy bed?" and he yelled "BIG BOY BED!" Then - miracle of miracles - he actually fell asleep in there. He's been sleeping there ever since. Alison and I were worried that this would be a really hard transition for him, but once again he has proved that we don't know anything about anything.
The other big boy development this week was that he learned how to open the back screen door from both sides. He already knew how to open it from inside, since all you really need to do is push - the latch doesn't quite work. But now he knows to pull down the handle and pull the door towards him when he wants to get back in. He celebrated this discovery by running in circles (noticing a trend here?) on the deck, in through the door yelling "INSIDE!" then getting a wicked smile on his face before running back "OUTSIDE!" He did this for at least 20 minutes, maybe more.
We saw the movie "Proof" this weekend, too. There was a line in it, stated by a university professor about his grad student - "As he approaches completion of his dissertation, time approaches infinity." Alison started laughing hysterically at this. I fail to see what's funny about it.
